it has no port number because, it is designed to communicate between routers and hosts, and not between application layer processes.but, ICMP is IP Protocol 1.

No, ICMP does not have a port number. But ICMP having a IP protocol 1

The ICMP packet does not have source & destination port numbers because it is designed to communicate between host and router not between application layer processes.

ICMP works by sending ECHO_REQUEST packet to the specified computer which then sends ECHO_REPLY packet in turns through IP address thus there is no need of port numbers.
