It uses udp protocol because it is fast,connection less but if packet size is more than 512 byte it will use tcp.

DNS uses TCP protocol when query is more than 512 bits, else it uses UDP

when DNS server is with in organisation or size is less than 512 bytes it uses udp protocol

else it uses tcp protocol

It uses both tcp and udp if the packet size is less than 512bytes than udp or else tcp.
